Hollywood is in a state of mourning after it was revealed that veteran Hollywood actor, James Handy has passed away. The Top Gun: Maverick star was reportedly 81 at the time of his death. His passing has left everyone in shock, especially after it was reported that he did not die from natural causes but was murdered by his girlfriend’s son. James Handy was reportedly found with a wound on his chest, meaning that he had been brutally stabbed to death.
Why did James Handy’s girlfriend’s son murder him?
According to a news release by the LAPD, James Handy was found suffering from a stab wound to his chest in the front yard of his home in Tarzana, California. By the time that the actor was transported to a local hospital, he had already succumbed to his injuries, and he was pronounced dead on May 3, 2026. According to jail records obtained by People, the suspect in James Handy’s murder case, his girlfriend’s son, has already been arrested and charged with one count of murder.
However, the question that is now on everyone’s mind is what prompted James’ girlfriend’s son, Michael Gledhill, to suddenly stab the actor to death. Well, while no motive for the fatal stabbing has been disclosed publicly as of now, it is worth noting that the Jumanji star’s neighbours have alleged to Fox 11 that they overheard James and Michael arguing overnight before the latter killed him. One neighbour even told the local news station that Michael was seemingly suffering from delusions.
Michael Gledhill told the authorities that “he was the one they were looking for”
While not much is known about James Handy’s murderer, Michael Gledhill, authorities have revealed that he was living with his mother, the actor’s girlfriend. He is reportedly 44 years old and had allegedly told the officers who arrived at the scene that “he was the one they were looking for.” According to the LAPD’s news release, he was the one who had initially called 911 to report the stabbing in the 19200 block of Erwin Street. In a disturbing statement, he allegedly told them:
“I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”
Upon their arrival, the officers found James Handy lying unconscious in front of his Tarzana, California home with multiple stab wounds to his chest. And after Michael Gledhill seemingly confessed to them, he was transported to Van Nuys Jail, where he is currently being held on a USD 2 million bond. According to the detectives, James Handy’s death was an “isolated incident and there appears to be no danger to the public at this time.” Additionally, it is worth noting that in a chilling doorbell footage obtained by Fox 11, Michael could be seen casually walking away from the scene of murder before returning to wave down the officers and surrender.

James Handy was a well-known American actor who appeared in movies and TV shows in the 1970s. Some of the hit films he has appeared in include K-9, K-11, Logan, and Unbreakable. He had also featured in several feature films, including Jumanji, 15 Minutes, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Rocketeer, and The Verdict. However, James was best known for his role in the movie, Top Gun: Maverick.
Many might not be aware that James had to step away from acting for a moment when he fought alongside the 196th Lightning Brigade in Tay Ninh during the Vietnam War at the age of 21. The actor later opened up about the harsh realities of being part of the war. In a 2013 interview, he recounted:
“We wound up getting into heavy combat for 27 days; we were in the field. It was pretty horrific. At first, when you’re over there, you’re in a combat zone, and it doesn’t really register because it doesn’t seem real. You’re 10,000 miles away from home, you’re in this jungle and woods. Parts of the country were beautiful, but at night it got so dark, you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.”
