Savannah Guthrie’s sudden exit from the Today Show during a live broadcast left internet users curious. It occurred on May 6, 2026, sparking rumors, especially about the ongoing investigation into her mother, Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. The longtime NBC host was seen leaving the set unexpectedly after nearly 90 minutes into the show. In turn, her co-anchor, Craig Melvin, later confirmed that she had stepped away earlier. Although neither NBC nor Savannah gave any justification behind her exit, the timing has raised questions due to her mother’s ongoing kidnapping investigation.
Savannah Guthrie made a sudden exit from the Today Show
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February 1, 2026. She disappeared from her home near Tucson, Arizona. Eventually, her investigation became one of the most followed missing-person cases in the country. Savannah’s sudden exit immediately caught viewers’ attention. Some of them took to their social media handles to ask what happened. During the live show, her co-host, Craig Melvin, briefly mentioned her absence and said she had “to leave a little early.”

But Craig also mentioned that Savannah was expected to return the next day. According to multiple reports, NBC insiders have put in place internal protocols to immediately alert Savannah to any major updates in her mother’s case. So, the timing of her departure has fueled fresh speculation because forensic teams across the U.S. are currently examining DNA evidence and surveillance footage related to Nancy’s disappearance. According to the investigators, new testing is going on on hair samples found at Nancy’s home.

Meanwhile, authorities are also reviewing new video evidence found near the 84-year-old’s neighborhood, where a masked man was seen around the time she disappeared. Nancy was last seen on January 31, 2026, after her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, dropped her off at her residence after a family dinner. The FBI later released footage from her doorbell camera, where an armed masked individual was seen approaching her front door in a bid to get inside. Shortly after the footage was released, Savannah shared his pics on Instagram and penned:
“We believe she is still alive. Bring her home.”

What has caused tension between the FBI and local investigators amid the Nancy Guthrie case?
The tensions between the federal and local investigators have become a part of public conversations now. FBI director, Kash Patel recently sat down for a conversation with Sean Hannity and claimed that the FBI was kept out of the investigation for the first four days. He called those initial hours “critical” in any kidnapping case. However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department disagreed with these claims. Sharing how the FBI was involved since the beginning, they said:
“A member of the FBI Task Force was also notified and present at that scene, working alongside our personnel. The FBI was promptly notified… coordination with the Bureau began without delay. The laboratory utilized… and the FBI Laboratory in Quantico has worked in close partnership from the outset.”

Will Nancy Guthrie’s case be solved within weeks?
Meanwhile, former FBI profiler, Jim Clemente believes the case may move faster than expected. He spoke to NewsNation and said investigators might identify the suspect “within weeks” if they review communication records and digital evidence related to the Guthrie family. He suggested that the kidnapping might be linked to Savannah. Jim held the theory that the suspect might have wanted to target the TV host, but instead, he went after her mother, who was an easy target. However, the authorities have not confirmed the theory.
