Remember when going grocery shopping
didn’t prompt sticker shock?
“A Walmart grocery receipt from 2006 is going viral and fueling fresh frustration over today’s food prices,” according to USA Today. “The receipt, recently shared by user ‘Kylei’ on X, shows 79 items totaling $161.87, including staples like eggs for
$1.28 and tomatoes for $1.24 per pound. The post has racked up more than 12 million views, with users marveling at how far grocery costs have climbed in the nearly two decades since.”
The woman who found it while going through her mother’s old belongings said the receipt made her “fall to her knees.”

The latest Labor
Department data shows food-at-home costs rose 0.7% in April, the largest monthly increase since 2022.
“Today, that same shopping list would likely cost well over $400,
depending on brand choices and current promotions,” according to KTAL, which compiled a list of prices of
today’s prices for the items on the old receipt. “This comparison highlights not just the impact of inflation on everyday necessities but also how significantly grocery budgets have been
stretched over the past two decades.”
For example, Post cereal which was $1.86 in 2006, now is around $4.97.
“The receipt surfaces at a time
when the cost of groceries remains a central talking point in American politics,” according
to The Independent. “President Donald Trump has repeatedly downplayed the ongoing price hikes, but higher costs at the grocery store continue to frustrate voters
nationwide.”
Buzzfeed complied some reactions from social media users over the
receipt.
“As you can imagine, folks had a minor existential crisis over the cost of food back then versus today,” according to Buzzfeed. “One person
was kind enough to dig into some of the numbers, saying that the total cost increase on 58 of the 75 items is 69%.”
