'Off Campus' Star Mika Abdalla Opens Up About Her Chemistry With Stephen Kalyn, 'Our Relationship..'

The new addition to everybody’s watchlist at present is none other than the young adult romance, Off Campus. The series has been gaining significant buzz for giving off similar vibes to shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and XO, Kitty. For those unaware, Off Campus premiered just a few days ago, on May 13, 2026, on the OTT giant, Amazon Prime Video. As the hype surrounding the series continues, actor, Mika Abdalla opened up about her chemistry with fellow co-star, Stephen Kalyn as well as the cliffhanger that Off Campus Season 1 ends in.

While ‘Dean’ and ‘Allie’s’ secret romance played quite a large part in Off Campus Season 1, the fan favourite couple might not be locked in for Season 2, as they are actually the focus of the third book titled The Score in Elle Kennedy’s eponymous book series. In the adaptation, Mika Abdalla and Stephen Kalyn’s characters, ‘Allie’ and ‘Dean’, get romantically involved following the former’s breakup with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Sean (Riley Davis).

Just when things were heating up between the pair in the finale, everything was thrown into a loop after it was revealed that ‘Allie’ had hooked up with ‘Hunter Davenport (Charlie Evans). Talking about how this cliffhanger actually sets the stage for more chaos in Off Campus Season 2, Mika told People:

“I think more than anything, it’s almost just a way to reset the clock a little bit. We get so much Allie and Dean in the beginning, or in the first season, that is so fun and great and cool, but I think they’re flying a little too close to the sun right now.”

As one might expect, ‘Hunter’s’ arrival at this point in the story is essentially a “wrench” in the growing romance between the characters. For one, it becomes really difficult for ‘Dean,’ prompting him to let his guard down and get hurt in a way that he’s never been hurt before. In addition to this, Mika added that the betrayal “makes his guard go up even higher, and he’s even more closed off than he was before.” However, ‘Allie’ is struggling too. According to the actress:

“She’s so insecure about hurting Sean. She’s so insecure about not being a good person and doing the wrong thing by people, and then she tries. She even says to Hunter, ‘I want to do this the right way this time. I hurt someone last time, and I don’t want to do that again.’ She says it and then inadvertently still ends up hurting him.”

Mika Abdalla opened up about her chemistry with Stephen Kalyn

There is no doubt that Mika and Stephen have amazing on-screen chemistry in Off Campus Season 1. Although, according to the actress, things didn’t start off so smoothly between them off-camera. Mika recalled that during the chemistry reads, she met three potential ‘Deans’, but Stephen wasn’t one of them and that they had to do Zooms with him later. And, she soon knew that Stephen was ‘Dean,’ claiming that it was pretty unanimous. But when they got on set in Vancouver, Mika and Stephen were “not close at all during the first couple weeks of production.” Mika said:

“I’m sure Stephen will hate that I say this, but I’m exposing him. He was scared of me when we met — super afraid of me. I have a pretty bad resting bitch face sometimes, and I don’t think that little sweet boy from Toronto is, like, equipped to deal with that.”

So one day, when Mika finally confronted Stephen, he told her point-blank, “I’m afraid of you. I feel like you hate me.” Thankfully, the actress clarified that it was just her face and that they have been “besties” since then. She added, “Our relationship has been extremely interesting, but now he’s like my brother. We’re very close.”
