Meta Restructuring: Plans To Move Thousands To AI Roles As Layoffs Loom 05/20/2026

Beyond cutting around 8,000 jobs, this week Meta is planning to reassign 7,000 employees to four new organizations focused primarily on developing artificial intelligence (AI) tools and apps,
according to an internal memo seen by Reuters and The New York Times.

First, Meta will officially cut 10% of its global workforce on Wednesday due to increased investment in AI
technologies, marking the first wave of what could be an ongoing series of job cuts scheduled throughout the remainder of 2026.

“We’re starting to see projects that used to require big
teams now be accomplished by a single very talented person,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on an earnings call with analysts in January, referencing Meta’s aggressive hiring pursuits as well as
the company’s plans to increase AI spending by at least 60% in 2026.

Notably, Meta is directing more of its money into AI ambitions, which involves investing heavily in AI chips, top talent, data centers and strategic acquisitions, including the recent purchase of AI agent and social-media platform Moltbook and the development of user-facing agentic technology across its social
platforms.

By building out its AI functionality while cutting portions of its workforce, by the end of this year, Meta expects to earn between $115 and $135 billion in capital
expenditures — a record for the company.

In addition to Wednesday’s job cuts, Meta’s head of HR Janelle Gale reportedly notified employees this week about a major workforce
restructuring, with newly founded internal organizations set to use “AI native design structures” made to limit the amount of employee oversight.

Gale stated that Meta believes its
AI-focused restructuring efforts “will make [the company] more productive and make the work more rewarding.”
