Rachel Nickell was stabbed 49 times, and she was 23 years old at the time of her death. Alex reportedly fell on the ground when his mother was attacked and was holding on to his mother’s body after she was stabbed. This was followed by several sessions for multiple weeks, where a child psychologist and Rachel’s boyfriend tried to get some details of the attack from Alex, who was a toddler. The situation took a worse turn when Alex started feeling disturbed after being taken to the murder spot, and Andre immediately rushed inside the car.

Although Andre Hanscombe left for another place with Alex after the incident, the impact of his mother’s death did not leave Alex, as he frequently had nightmares. Notably, Andre and Alex avoided discussing the case. But the latter once mentioned that a “bad man” murdered his mother. According to My London, Alex studied hypnotherapy and graphology in Barcelona. He is also the author of a book, Letting Go: A True Story of Murder, Loss and Survival, which speaks about the impact of the murder case.

While Alex was two years old when the murder happened, he managed to provide the details related to how his mother was murdered and a description of the culprit’s appearance. The entire family was living in Balham, South London, in 1992. Back in 2017, Alex recalled in an interview with The Guardian that he said goodbye to his father during the morning hours on the day of the incident. Alex said that the man who attacked his mother appeared suddenly, and the individual had a blank face and was wearing a white shirt, holding a black bag. Alex continued by saying:

“It’s not like it happens in the movies. It was so quick, and everything was silent. There was this strange polarity – even though it was hectic and violent and there was blood, at the same time, there was this big feeling of peace and tranquillity. To me, my mother just looked like she was lying there, ready to wake any moment, like in the imaginary games we used to play.”
