India PC Market Gets Record Quarterly Shipment, HP Retains First Rank

There have been record sales in the personal computer (PC) market in the country in the last quarter. 49 lakh PCs have been supplied during July-September. A major reason behind this is the increase in purchases due to discounts during the festive season. American devices maker HP retains its first position in this market.

A report by market research firm IDC states that this segment has recorded the highest growth of 14.2 percent on a year-on-year basis in the workstation category. After this, sales of desktops have increased by 11.6 percent and those of notebooks by about 9.5 percent. The demand for notebooks with Artificial Intelligence (AI) features is increasing rapidly. These notebooks have achieved sales of more than one lakh units for the first time in a quarter. The report said, “In the third quarter, the PC market, including desktops, workstations and notebooks, registered a growth of 10.1 percent on a year-on-year basis. PC shipments were approximately 49 lakh units. This is the highest quarterly sales in this market.”

HP retains its first position in the PC market. However, HP’s share declined to 26.6 percent in the third quarter. The company has shipped approximately 13.17 lakh units. Chinese devices maker Lenovo has secured the second position with shipment of 8.91 lakh units. This market Lenovo’s share is about 18 percent. Acer is at third position with shipment of 7.42 lakh units. Acer’s share in this market is about 15 percent. Dell has secured the fourth position with shipments of around 7.21 lakh units. Dell’s share in the PC market is about 14.6 percent. Asus has shipped 5.03 lakh units and has a share of 10.2 percent.

Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager, International Data Corporation (IDC), said, “There has been a change in the purchasing patterns of customers. Many customers have postponed purchases to take advantage of discounts in festive sales of e-commerce platforms. Due to this, device makers have kept shipments low in the second quarter and increased inventory for the third quarter.”
