Gullak is back with a new season and has brought back all the nostalgia along with it. In an era of suspense, crime and murder mysteries, Gullak bring a sense of soothing fresh air to people. When OTTs are dominated by bold content, Gullak is a relief and takes us back to the nostalgia driven childhood memories, where the ‘Gullak’ (piggy bank) was the ultimate source of saving of a middle-class household.
Gullak season 5 plot
The first four seasons of Gullak was highly successful and the show is back again after two years on SonyLIV with its fifth season. Like the previous seasons, Gullak season 5 reminds us of the little joys of life, taking us away from the stressful and rushed life. The new season has the Mishra family of the Mishra Niwas 534 opting for modernisation. In the very first shot, you see paint buckets, rollers, putty, and brushes lying in a corner of the house.

Yes, you guessed it right. The Mishra family is all set to get the home painted. Like the pride of a middle-class patriarch, father, Santosh Mishra is apprehensive to take money from his elder son, Annu for renovation. Another interesting change in the Mishra household is the arrival of a Wi-Fi router as Anu wants an uninterrupted internet connection for his office meetings. To make space for the router, the gullak (piggy bank) has to move from its older place.

The storytelling of Gullak season 5 remains gentle and grounded. It is filled with everyday conflicts and warm family conversations between the Mishras. The latest season also shows the idea of a woman’s identity, which is restricted to being someone’s mother, wife or daughter. Shanti Mishra despite her multiple attempts is just restricted to her household chorus and was seen struggling for her identity. In a key scene, Shanti tells her husband Santosh that she doesn’t want her future daughter-in-law to make sacrifices in the name of being an “acchhi lady”.

Gullak season 5 acting and character improvisations
Nothing much has changed in the way the characters are portrayed. The father, Santosh (Jameel Khan) faces financial strain as he applies for a housing loan for his house’s renovation. The mother, Shanti Mishra (Geetanjali Kulkarni) still struggles to find her identity. The elder son of the family Annu (now played by Anantvijay Joshi) grapples to lead the responsibility of his home. The younger son, Aman (Harsh Mayar) resorts to desperate measures to earn money and the nosy neighbour, Bittu Ki Mummy (Sunita Rajwar) is still poking her nose in the Mishra household.

Though ‘Bittu ki Mummy’ is now having her content-creator/social-media-activist moment with a newfound identity. The role of Anu bhaiya is now taken by Anant Joshi from Vaibhav Raj Gupta from the previous seasons. He does not try to imitate the earlier Annu Bhaiya. Instead, he brings a fresh flavour and approach. While Vaibhav Raj Gupta’s many “Aapko nahin pata?” moments are missed, Anant has beautifully adapted the role. New addition of Gopal Dutt as ‘Pinky Mama’ brings some chaos and confusion.

Final verdict of Gullak season 5
Gullak, the earthen piggy bank is synonymous to the show as it remains a witness to the life of a family growing old. Vidit Tripathi’s writing remains the backbone of the show and the dialogues gives us a sense of connect. The ending of Gullak season 5 ends too neatly and conveniently and many felt that it was rushed. But despite every new addition and other shortcomings, Gullak felt like a comfort zone, a space you wish to revisit again and again as it brought the nostalgia that is missing in our lives.
