India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has the opportunity to become only the seventh captain to lift the Women’s T20 World Cup and just the third to win both the 50-over and 20-over ICC World Cups.
Only two captains have achieved that double so far: England’s Charlotte Edwards and Australia’s Meg Lanning.
What sets Lanning apart is the scale of her success. She remains the only captain to have won the Women’s T20 World Cup more than once, leading Australia to four titles.
Lanning, who retired from international cricket in 2023, claimed her first trophy in the 2014 edition, her maiden ICC tournament as captain. She then guided Australia to three more titles in 2018, 2020 and 2023. The only blemish during her tenure came in 2016, when Australia lost to West Indies in the final.
Her record at Women’s T20 World Cups is remarkable. As captain, Lanning won 24 of her 30 matches, losing only six. She also starred with the bat, scoring 992 runs in 35 matches at an average of 39.68.
Lanning was the tournament’s leading run-scorer in 2014 and still holds the record for the highest individual score in Women’s T20 World Cup history, her unbeaten 126 against Ireland in 2014.
The other captains to have won the Women’s T20 World Cup are Charlotte Edwards (England, 2009), Alex Blackwell (Australia, 2010), Jodie Fields (Australia, 2012), Stafanie Taylor (West Indies, 2016) and Sophie Devine (New Zealand, 2024).
