Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, better known as Vijay, is one of the most popular names in Tamil cinema. The actor par excellence is tagged as one of the highest-paid stars in South Indian cinema. After making his debut as a child artist in Vetri in 1984, he made his debut as a hero in the film, Naalaiya Theerpu. Since then, there has been no looking back for him.
After delivering a string of back-to-back hit films, Vijay announced his retirement from acting and entered politics. In February 2024, the actor announced the launch of his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. While his professional life was marked by milestones one after another, his personal life was not all that rosy.
Thalapathy Vijay’s marriage to Sangeetha Sornalingam
Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, hails from a Sri Lankan Tamil family and was moved to London as a child. She was one of Vijay’s die-hard fans and eventually tied the knot with him on August 25, 1999, in Chennai. It was an interfaith marriage as Vijay is a Christian and his wife, Sangeetha, is a Hindu. However, soon their marriage was hit by rumours of his extra-marital affair with actress, Trisha Krishnan.
Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan’s on-screen chemistry paved the way for their off-screen romance
Vijay is a superstar of Tamil cinema, and among his many co-stars, Trisha is the one with whom he shared great camaraderie. They were first seen together on-screen in the 2004 film, Ghilli, which was a blockbuster hit. The pair then went on to act in films like Aathi, Thirupachi, and Kuruvi. They were the hit pair of the South Indian film industry.
But soon rumours of their affair made its way to the headlines. There were speculations that both Trisha and Vijay were madly in love with each other. Though Vijay has often rubbished the rumours, Trisha, on the other hand, gave subtle hints that the two were indeed dating. The actress shared a mirror selfie with Thalapathy Vijay in June 2024 and wrote:
“The calm to a storm, The storm to a calm! To many more milestones ahead.”
In December 2024, Vijay and Trisha were spotted travelling together to Goa for actress Keerthy Suresh’s wedding with Antony Thattil. Many reports also suggested that the alleged couple have been living together for some time now.
Thalapathy Vijay was asked by his family to stop working with Trisha Krishnan
Despite being one of the hit pairs of the South Indian film industry, Trisha Krishnan and Thalapathy Vijay stopped working together after 2008. It was speculated that Vijay was asked by his family not to work with Trisha due to rumours of their affair. After 15 long years, the duo shared the screen space again in the film, Leo.
Why did Sangeetha file for divorce from Vijay?
On February 27, 2026, news of Thalapathy Vijay and Sangeetha Sornalingam’s separation surfaced online. According to a report by The Indian Express, Vijay’s wife filed for divorce at the Chengalpattu Family Court. Her petition was filed under Section (1)(a), (b), (d) and Sections 36 & 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
In her petition, Sangeetha stated that she discovered an alleged affair involving Vijay and a female actress in April 2021. Sangeetha, in her petition, also stated that despite many assurances, Vijay continued his illicit relationship. As soon as Sangeetha filed for divorce, people were certain that the actress she mentioned was none other than Trisha Krishnan. Days after Sangeetha announced her divorce, Vijay and Trisha were seen at a wedding reception in Chennai.
