At 15, life is usually simple.
The biggest concerns are school, friends, exams and finding enough time to play. Dreams often exist in the distance, tucked away in conversations with family and teammates, waiting for their moment.
For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, that moment has arrived much sooner than anyone could have imagined.
In the space of a few months, the left-hander has gone from being a highly rated youngster to one of the most exciting names in Indian cricket. The fearless strokeplay, the records and the growing list of milestones have thrust him into a spotlight that few cricketers experience, let alone teenagers.
Yet, amid the noise, the hype and the expectations, it is worth remembering that Sooryavanshi is still only 15.
Behind the towering sixes that have lit up stadiums and social media alike is a soft-spoken, shy teenager whose life has changed almost overnight. The attention will only intensify from here as he prepares to travel to Ireland and England with India’s senior T20I squad before potentially representing the country at the Asian Games later this year.
Every innings will be dissected, every failure magnified and every success celebrated. That is often the price of extraordinary talent.
But Sooryavanshi has already shown he belongs on the biggest stage. The left-hander forced his way into contention after a sensational IPL campaign, scoring 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30. Currently with the India ‘A’ side in Sri Lanka for the tri-series, he has now become the youngest player selected in an India men’s squad since Sachin Tendulkar burst onto the scene in the late 1980s.
“What do you say about Vaibhav? We’ve seen what he can do. You saw that even towards those playoffs, he single-handedly carried the Rajasthan Royals. I don’t need to talk about how well he’s batting or how well he’s playing. And it’s not just this season,” said Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee.
“He obviously had a great start last season, and to back it up for a young kid in a competition that’s as competitive and as high-pressure environment as the IPL, he’s an explosive game-changer. Like everyone else who’s watched T20 cricket, we have high hopes of him, and I think he has just picked himself well..
“His performances… he’s forced us to pick him with how well he’s played. I know his age… how young he is and early in his career. But like I said, two IPLs in a row – what he was doing at the Under-19 level was probably a step down to what the IPL or senior cricket is. But we can all see what kind of talent he has, and we are hopeful that, if and when he gets the opportunity to play for the country, he will show the Playing for the country will mean tougher challenges, but he has shown tremendous temperament through his performances.
However, Sooryavanshi’s selection has also created a logistical challenge for the team management. He is currently part of the India ‘A’ squad in Sri Lanka for the tri-series, which runs from June 9 to 21, while India’s T20I series in Ireland begins on June 26.
Acknowledging the situation, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said: “The way the announcement has been made, we will have to think about the fact that He is a part of the India ‘A’ squad for the tri-nation as well. And he’s part of the England and Ireland series. We will have to take a call because the finalization of his selection took place today, about an hour ago. We’ll have to take a call and decide what’s best for him. The priority will be for him to go to Ireland and England You will know at an appropriate time…”
For now, though, perhaps the best thing Indian cricket can do is allow Sooryavanshi to be what he is — not a phenomenon, not the next big thing, but a remarkably gifted teenager learning his craft while the spotlight grows brighter around him.
The runs will come. The records may follow.
But before all that, he is still a 15-year-old with a bat in his hand, a dream in his heart and a future that appears almost limitless.
