Tata Motors today (May 12) launched the CNG model of its premium hatchback Altroz in India with AMT (Automatic Transmission) gearbox. With this, Tata Altroz iCNG has become the first premium hatchback in India to have automatic transmission with CNG.

Tata has introduced it in 5 variants – Pure, Pure S, Creative, Creative S and Accomplished S. Its starting ex-showroom price is ₹ 8.70 lakh, which goes up to ₹ 10.77 lakh in the top model. AMT models are costlier than the manual by ₹55,000 to ₹60,000, depending on the variant.

Competition with Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glaza

Altroz competes directly with Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glaza and Hyundai i20. CNG option is also available in Baleno and Glanza, but they only come with manual gearbox. In such a situation, Altroz will attract those customers who are looking for an automatic CNG car with luxury. Altroz comes with many segment first features.

Exterior: Twin pod projector LED headlamps and flush door handles

There has been no change in the design of Altroz. The company has continued with its iconic ‘aero-dynamic’ look

  • Front Profile: The front part of the car gets the signature ‘Humanity Line’ grille and sharp looking projector headlamps. Its sporty bumpers and wide air intakes give it the feel of a muscular hatchback.
  • Side Profile: When seen from the side, it gets the same 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels as before. The biggest feature of the Altroz is its ’90-degree opening doors’, which is still intact. This makes it much easier for the elderly and children to get in and out of the car.
  • Rear Profile: At the rear, it has a tailgate with black-out treatment and split LED tail lamps. ‘iCNG’ and ‘AMT’ badging has been given on the rear of the car, which makes it different from the standard model.

Interior: Dual 10.25-inch displays with beige color theme

Tata Altroz 2025 has a dual-tone dashboard and new premium upholstery in badge color. The cabin now gets a ‘two-spoke illuminated steering wheel’ and a touch-based AC control panel like the Nexon. The automatic variant gets an updated gear lever and ambient lighting with a gloss black finish on the dashboard.

The car has a segment first 10.25-inch fully digital driver display, which offers maps and customization options. There is also a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center. Apart from this, features like voice command sunroof, auto AC, cruise control, air purifier, 8-speaker sound system and connected car technology are also included.

Performance: Along with petrol engine, CNG option will also be available.

No mechanical changes have been made in the updated model. Tata Altroz is the only hatchback in the segment to offer 3 engine options – petrol, turbo petrol and diesel. Apart from this, CNG option is also available along with petrol engine.

A 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is available, which generates 88hp power and 113Nm torque. For gearbox, the option of 5-speed manual transmission and 6-speed DCA (automatic) is available. This engine is good for everyday driving, but less powerful than the turbo. With this the car gives a mileage of 19.05-19.33 kmpl (ARAI certified). The DCA gearbox, usually seen in premium cars, offers a more refined experience than the AMT or CVT in this segment.

The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine generates 73.5hp power and 103Nm torque in CNG. For gearbox, it will now also get automatic gearbox along with 5-speed manual transmission. With this the car gives a mileage of 26.2 km/kg (ARAI certified). The CNG variant makes for economical running costs, but power is slightly reduced.

The Altroz also has the option of a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which generates 110hp power and 170Nm torque. For gearbox, it only gets 5-speed manual transmission. With this the car gives a mileage of 18.5kmpl (ARAI certified). It is better for sporty driving, especially on the highway and gives good power.

The fourth and last powertrain option in Altroz is a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which generates 90hp power and 200Nm torque. For gearbox, it only gets 5-speed manual transmission. With this the car gives a mileage of 23.64 – 25.11kmpl (ARAI certified). The diesel engine delivers high torque at low rpm, which is a good option for long distance driving and mileage.

Safety Features: 360-degree camera with 6 airbags

Tata Altroz is India’s safest hatchback, having received a 5-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test. It is the only hatchback in this segment to achieve this rating. Its strong build quality and safety features make it different. Safety features include:

  • 6 Airbags: Available from entry-level variant onwards.
  • GSP: For stability and control.
  • 360-Degree Camera and Blind View Monitor: For better visibility.
  • 90-Degree Door Opening: For easy entry and exit.
  • Express Cool and Tire Pressure Monitoring: Additional features and safety.

The CNG variant also gets additional features for tank protection, which is rare in this segment. The Dual Clutch Automatic (DCA) gearbox also comes with safety features, such as no idling in case of accidental door opening in Drive mode, which is especially useful for new drivers.
