Rob Base, born Robert Ginyard in Harlem, New York City, met his future collaborator, DJ E-Z Rock, when they were just in the fifth grade. After being inspired by local hip-hop acts, they went on to form a duo as teenagers. Not long after this, they began gaining attention with tracks like DJ Interview and Make It Hot. However, it was their 1988 release, It Takes Two that became one of the defining hip-hop tracks of the time.
According to reports, it reached number three on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart. Additionally, their debut album of the same name peaked at number four on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It is worth noting that to this day, It Takes Two has remained a widely sampled and influential song. For instance, the song appeared in movies like The Proposal and Iron Man 2 and has been referenced by artists like Snoop Dogg and Black Eyed Peas.
Rob Base released a solo album titled The Incredible Base in 1989, but reunited with E-Z Rock just a few years later for their 1984 album, Break of Dawn. And a decade later, in 2014, E-Z Rock passed away from complications linked to diabetes.
