The reality TV series, Love Island USA, is back with a new season and a whole bunch of attractive and single ‘islanders.’ For those unaware, Season 8 premiered on June 2, 2026, featuring the contestants competing for a USD 100,000 grand prize. The first episode kicked off with 10 episodes, and among them, Sean Reifel generated a lot of buzz for giving up his stable job as a police officer to be on the show. Well, now that Sean has been eliminated from Love Island USA Season 8, Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds revealed how he can get his old job back.
Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds reveals how Sean Reifel can get back to being a police officer
Before his brief stint on Love Island USA Season 8, Sean Reifel was a police officer in Bethlehem, PA. However, he decided to leave the job to join the rest of the ‘islanders’ in the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji. His time on the show reportedly came to an end rather quickly, and now Sean has a chance to get his old job back, although it’s not going to be an easy task.

In a recent interview, Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds revealed that if Sean does indeed want to get his old job back as a police officer, it is not out of the question, but he will have to start the hiring process from scratch. According to Mayor Reynolds, the police department has not yet heard from Sean after he was eliminated from the reality show. So, while it remains to be seen whether Sean decides to return to his police work, it seems that his employment process will be the same as that for anyone else trying to join the force.

It is worth noting that Mayor Reynolds had previously admitted that he was “disappointed” Sean Reifel left his job, as it created a vacancy in the department. He even expressed his disbelief about how someone could let go of such an opportunity just to participate in a reality show. The Mayor was quoted as saying:
“Our police department spent a lot of time training, and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy. We are disappointed he left as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year…I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”

Sean Reifel’s former supervisor slammed him for leaving his police officer job
In order to join Love Island USA Season 8, Sean Reifel resigned from his police officer job just nine months after his swearing-in. Reportedly, Sean’s decision was not viewed favourably by his former supervisor, Bethlehem Police Chief Michelle Kott. While Michelle admitted that she “loves Sean” and thought of him as a “good guy” and “great officer,” she was not a fan of the timing and the way Sean resigned. During a recent conversation, Michelle claimed that the department had done everything it could to hire only the “best people” worthy of serving in the police force. And despite Sean being an asset to the team, he still had to step down from his duties as a cop.

According to Michelle, Sean had wanted weeks of leave to participate in the reality TV show, something which was not possible for the Bethlehem PD. Explaining further, she said that the department would never allow for a multi-week leave of absence, especially for something like a reality TV show when they were already so understaffed. Ultimately, it was Sean’s call to choose participating in the show over his job. To quote Michelle Kott:
“I love Sean; he’s a good guy, he was a great officer, but I’m disappointed. We work so incredibly hard to try to recruit the best people we can to be part of the Bethlehem Police Department. At this time, I don’t think there’d be a department that would be willing to allow someone to leave for ‘x’ amount of weeks to go on a television show when everyone’s hurting right now, and overtime is being utilised to fill those gaps. Officers are getting burnt out. It’s just a bad look to me.”
