Instagram is soon going to give its users a new feature, with the help of which they will be able to decide what kind of content the platform’s algorithm should show them. The Meta-owned platform has announced the further expansion of the “Your Algorithm” feature. The company says that through this, users will be able to see which topics Instagram considers them to be interested in and will also be able to change those topics if needed.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri tweeted Post Told that the new feature will allow users to better control the algorithms in many parts of Instagram, including the main feed. Currently, the feature will only show topics, but the company plans to add people, content types, moods, and other preferences in the future.

The company has been working towards giving users more control over algorithms for some time. Earlier Instagram Reels and Explore Page “Your Algorithm” feature has also been introduced for . Now it is being expanded to the main feed so that users can further customize the content experience as per their choice.

According to Mosseri, the algorithms of social media platforms have become quite advanced over time, but this has reduced the control of users over their choices to some extent. He said the current system learns based on users’ activities like taps, watches and shares, but users don’t have the option to directly specify what exactly they want to see.

Instagram believes this is why many people find the social media experience sometimes uncomfortable. The company now wants to create such a system in which users are not just influenced by algorithms, but can also decide for themselves what kind of content should be shown to them.

Mosseri said that the ranking models used earlier were difficult for ordinary users to understand. However, now with the help of Large Language Models (LLMs), Instagram can explain different groups of content in words that users can easily understand. This will enable the platform to show how the system is understanding a user’s interests and the user will be able to change them if needed.
