Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday launched India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system. This system has been started at Choryasi toll plaza on NH-48 in Surat-Bharuch section in Gujarat, through which vehicles will be able to pay toll without stopping. Barrier-free tolling is based on Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology. This allows vehicles passing at a speed of 120 km/h to pass through the toll point without stopping. While traditional toll plazas have physical barriers, this system uses overhead frames equipped with sensors and cameras to automatically identify vehicles and deduct toll fees in real time. AI cameras will read the number plates of vehicles passing even at a speed of 120. This system connects FASTag with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. High-performance AI cameras read number plates of passing vehicles even at speeds of 120 kmph, while RFID readers scan FASTag stickers. After this, the toll amount is deducted directly from the linked account. If FASTag is not working in a vehicle or FASTag is not installed on the vehicle, then the camera identifies the vehicle through the number plate and sends an e-notice to the owner. This system will reduce the travel time significantly and will also reduce the jam on the highway. It is also being claimed that there will be fuel savings. There will be reduction in pollution caused by vehicles and minimum number of people will be required in toll operation. The new system will save fuel. According to the ministry, this system will reduce travel time, reduce jams on highways, save fuel, reduce vehicle pollution and also reduce human intervention in toll operations. The launch of MLFF is a major step towards digitization of India’s toll system and modernization of national highways, at par with international standards, the statement said.
