According to reports, Bharathiraja had been dealing with health issues for quite some time. The veteran director was admitted to a Chennai hospital in late 2025 after experiencing breathing difficulties. In the months that followed, he remained under medical supervision and underwent several treatment plans for multiple age-related health complications. While the family is yet to make any statements about what led to the filmmaker’s demise, reports earlier in 2026 stated that he had also been dealing with a lung infection and recurring respiratory problems.

According to reports, he endured a devastating personal loss in 2025 when his son, actor-director, Manoj Bharathiraja, died following a cardiac arrest at the age of 48. The filmmaker was shaken by the loss, and family members and close associates indicated that the veteran filmmaker found it difficult to cope.

His contribution to Indian cinema earned him numerous honours, including multiple National Film Awards and the Padma Shri.
