In a case reported in Britain, fake shopping websites appeared in the search results of ChatGPT, due to which people could have become victims of fraud. According to scam-detection service ‘Ask Silver’, cyber criminals had created fake websites of famous retail brands. When ChatGPT was asked about popular products, in some cases fake websites were also seen in it. How does this new scam work? Suppose you want to buy a bag of any brand and ask for suggestions from ChatGPT. AI shows you some similar products and their prices. If you click on the link given there, it is possible that you may reach a fake website. These websites look like genuine brands, claim deep discounts and try to collect payment and banking information from customers. Know about AI poaching: A website should not be considered genuine just because its link is shown by a famous AI tool. In some cases, scammers put a large number of fake content and clone websites on the Internet. This may allow the AI model to consider even inaccurate or misleading sources as legitimate. This process is called ‘AI poisoning’. It is growing rapidly. Keep these things in mind while shopping: 1. Check the URL of the website carefully. Look for the official domain like .com or .co.in. Be cautious if you see words like ‘official’, ‘deals’, ‘sale’ in the URL. 2. Beware of huge discounts. Discounts ranging from 70% to 90% can often be a danger sign. 3. Go directly to the brand’s website. Instead of clicking on the AI link, search the name of the brand yourself.
