Former U.S. Congressman, Barney Frank has passed away at the age of 86. He was one of America’s most popular voices for LGBTQ+ rights and financial reform. The former lawmaker reportedly died on May 19, 2026. Barney was admired for his decades-long political career and historic role as the first openly gay member of Congress. While political leaders, activists, and former colleagues are praising his achievements, let us know all about Barney Frank’s final days and cause of death. 

What was Barney Frank’s cause of death?

According to multiple U.S. media reports, Barney Frank has died after suffering from some complications related to congestive heart failure. He was placed in hospice care during his final days. It was at his home in Ogunquit, Maine, in late April 2026. Braney’s family had to take the call after his health began to decline rapidly. Previously, in an interview with Politico, Barney openly discussed his condition and admitted that his heart was reaching a stage where it might no longer function properly.

At the same time, he acknowledged that he had made it longer with his health struggles than he had earlier thought. Meanwhile, former campaign manager, Jim Segal later told Axios that Barney had informed his close friends and family about his decision to enter hospice care. He added that the former lawmaker was “at peace with himself” during his final days. Some reports also noted that he remained mentally active and continued to work on political commentary and writing work under hospice care. In Jim’s words:

“He notified everybody that he was in hospice, so it was just a matter of time. He was certainly at peace with himself.”

Despite his declining health, Barney reportedly remained engaged in politics until the end. According to his close associates, he continued to share his views on national political issues. At the same time, his humor and blunt honesty were the highlights of his public life. Meanwhile, Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described Frank as an “idealist” and “pragmatist”. Especially, she praised his leadership during the 2008 financial crisis.

Barney Frank’s personal life 

Barney Frank is survived by his husband, Jim Ready, and three siblings, Ann Lewis, Doris Breay, and David Frank. They remained close to him during his final weeks in hospice care. Barney made history in 2012 when he married Jim Ready. In turn, he became the first sitting member of Congress to enter a same-sex marriage. They reportedly met at a political fundraiser in 2005 and stayed together for more than two decades. Barney’s sister, Doris Breay, spoke to NBC Boston about his death and called him a “wonderful brother.” On the other hand, his sister, Ann Lewis, made a successful career in politics and served as a senior adviser to former President, Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton.

Barney Frank was born in Bayonne, New Jersey. He was born into a Jewish family descended from Russia and Poland. He first served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 2013, representing Massachusetts for 16 consecutive terms. Initially, he was a local political worker from Massachusetts and served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in the 1970s. However, he became one of his country’s most influential lawmakers on financial policy after becoming the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee in 2008.

He and Chris Dodd worked on the landmark Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, shaping new banking regulations. In fact, he also made history in 1987 by voluntarily coming out as gay when he was a Congressman.
