Mackenzie Shirilla Shares Expert Testimony On IG Amid 'The Crash', 'Proves She Had Medical Episode'

The Mackenzie Shirilla case has been hogging fresh spotlight amid the release of one of the most anticipated true-crime documentaries this year, titled The Crash. For those unaware, the documentary dropped on May 15, 2026, on the OTT giant, Netflix. It tells the story of a then-17-year-old found guilty of murder. Now, amid the buzz surrounding the documentary, Mackenzie Shirilla shared expert testimony from her dismissed appeal, which ‘proves she had a medical episode’ during the fatal crash.

Recently, Mackenzie Shirilla’s Instagram account, which has over 16k followers, posted a series of pictures that include text messages and memes implying her love for her late boyfriend, Dominic. Additionally, the account also posted screenshots of court documents that testify to Mackenzie’s innocence. What caught everyone’s attention was that in one section of the screenshot, an expert of some sort appears to state that “based on their review of material,” Mackenzie had suffered a medical incident, which was what led to the 100-mph crash killing two people.

If reports are believed to be true, the screenshot posted on Mackenzie’s account was taken from her post-conviction relief paperwork. For those unaware, the appeal to overturn her appeal was actually rejected as it was submitted one day after the 365-day deadline. They stated:

“Shirilla’s post-conviction relief petition was filed on the 366th day following the filing of her trial transcript. Accordingly, we find that the trial court correctly determined it was without jurisdiction to consider the petition.”

Coming back to the screenshot, the document argued that the reason Mackenzie Shirilla submitted a First Amendment supplement to her petition for post-conviction relief was that her defence during the trial was “ineffective” as it did not put forward an expert opinion to back up the claim that her POTS caused her to pass out. This time, however, they shared a portion from Kamal Chemali, MD, a Professor of Neurology from Cleveland, who examined Mackenzie’s medical records and claimed that the evidence is “consistent with Ms. Shirilla having a medical episode” to what he claimed was a “reasonable degree of scientific and medical certainty.”

Kamal Chameli pointed out a number of factors to prove his point. According to him, there was a lack of concussion or head trauma, and taking into consideration Mackenzie’s lack of memory of the crash, her lactate levels and low blood oxygen, it was highly likely that the then-17-year-old had a “seizure episode with a loss of consciousness.”

For those who haven’t seen The Crash yet, it shows video footage of Mackenzie being verbally abusive to her boyfriend, Dominic. They also presented a number of texts between the duo, highlighting their toxic relationship and how Mackenzie was usually the one promoting this toxicity. However, according to the text messages that Mackenzie shared, it seemingly went against the narrative of The Crash. For instance, in some of the messages, she texted Dominic’s family asking them to keep an eye on him as he was allegedly acting “crazy.” Other texts showed how Dom was allegedly “mean” to her.

It is worth noting that the relationship drama between Mackenzie and Dom was taken as key proof that the former crashed her car intentionally. According to reports, at the time, Tim Troup, the lead prosecutor in the case, told the court:

“There is no doubt that this happened because of the relationship with Dominic, and the defendant’s intent was clearly to end that, and she took everybody that was in the car with her. This was not reckless driving. This was murder.”
