The country’s smartphone market has declined in the first quarter of this year. Handset companies had already shipped a large number of devices in anticipation of a rise in smartphone prices due to rising costs of memory parts. This is a decline of about 4.1 percent compared to the same period last year. Smartphone companies had started accumulating inventory in anticipation of rising prices. However, sales have declined due to weak consumer demand after the festive season. Apart from this, due to increase in the prices of smartphones, sales have also been affected.
The number of shipments of smartphones has decreased in the first quarter but the total value of smartphones has increased by about 5.8 percent. Customers in the country are preferring expensive smartphones. Because of this, there has been an increase in value instead of volume in the smartphone market. The average selling price of smartphones increased by about 10.4 percent in the first quarter to about 302 dong (about Rs 29,000). Chinese handset maker Vivo holds the first position in this market with about 19.6 percent share. It is followed by South Korea’s Samsung with about 17.1 percent share.
China’s Oppo’s sales have increased the most in the smartphone market by about 22 percent. Oppo’s market share is about 15.3 percent. In the first quarter, China’s Xiaomi and its sub-brand Poco have a combined market share of about 12.2 percent. American devices maker Apple has secured the fourth position with about 9.4 percent market share. iPhone 17 has become the most demanded smartphone series for Apple so far. Launched in September last year, this series includes iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. iPhone sales have increased in double-digits in some major markets including India. The company’s first foldable iPhone may also be launched this year.
