Stephen Colbert Reacts As CBS Replaces 'The Late Show', A Look At The Host's Earnings From The Show

It was last year, when reports claimed that CBS would end one of its longest-running shows, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The show would end in May 2026, as reported. For the unversed, the show first began in 1993 with David Letterman, and in 2015, Stephen Colbert took the host seat.

The show has become one of the most-watched shows of all time. As the show is nearing its end, reports claimed that The Late Show would be replaced by Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed. Recently, Stephen Colbert reacted to the same, as he got to learn that his The Late Show would be taken over by Comics Unleashed. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Stephen Colbert revealed that he reached out to Byron Allen after he had the information that another of the longest-running shows of CBS, Comics Unleashed, will take the slot of 11.35 PM after The Late Show ends its run.

What was Stephen Colbert’s salary from The Late Show?

Stephen called Byron ‘fascinating’ and also gave a reference that Byron was the youngest comedian to perform on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show. He also joked that Byron should acknowledge Johnny Carson as a part of the moment. He further mentioned that he had nothing to do with CBS’s programming decision. Well, as The Late Show is about to end, let’s have a look at the longtime host Stephen Colbert’s salary.

Stephen Colbert is a famous comedian, writer, actor, author, and talk show host who has a wonderful career in television, and as per Celebrity Net Worth, his net worth is around USD 75 million. If the reports are to be believed, when Stephen Colbert began his career with the show, he earned an annual package of USD 6 million. Reportedly, in 2019, he had a contract extension with CBS Corp, which led him to earn USD 15 million and that kept him with the network till 2023. In 2023, Colbert had another contract renewal, which lasted for three years. CBS has previously revealed that it decided to pull the plug on The Late Show, and it would end its run in May 2026.

Why is CBS ending The Late Show?

CBS’s decision to end The Late Show came as a shock to many, for this had been one of the longest-running shows and one of the flagship talk shows of the decade. CBS revealed that it had to pull the plug due to financial pressure in the late-night television landscape. While this has been said to be the only reason for CBS pulling the plug on the show, there have been other speculations as well.

Colbert has been one of the biggest critics of Trump, and it was said that just two weeks before CBS announced that the show would be cancelled, Paramount actually settled a USD 60 million lawsuit with Donald Trump (which was due to an interview of  Kamala Harris), which made people wonder if that could be a reason.

Apart from this, reports claimed that the show’s ad revenue was making it unprofitable, as it had faced financial struggles for several years, which resulted in a significant drop in ratings, thereby leading the modern generation more towards digital media. Last year, reports were also rife that Paramount, which owns CBS, had been seeking the Trump administration’s approval to sell the network to Skydance Media. However, in the announcement post, there was no mention of Paramount; rather, it was stated that the decision was taken only due to financial pressure.
