The 2026 Assembly elections marked one of the most dramatic moments in Indian politics, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning over Bengal’s long-reigning party, Trinamool Congress (TMC). And now, all eyes are on the leading contenders in the run for the next chief minister of Bengal after Mamata Banerjee. Among the female candidates, the frontrunner for the position is renowned fashion designer-turned politician, Agnimitra Paul.
With the party now preparing to form its first government in Bengal, Agnimitra has emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the next chief minister’s post, especially after her massive win margin of over 40,000 votes from Asansol Dakshin. As speculation intensifies over who could replace Mamata Banerjee, many insiders believe Paul could become the party’s answer to Bengal’s long-standing woman-led political narrative. Here’s everything you need to know about her.
Agnimitra Paul’s journey, from fashion designing to Bengal politics

Before stepping into politics, Agnimitra Paul was a known name in India’s fashion industry. Born in Asansol in 1974, she studied science and initially wanted to become a doctor. She later pursued fashion design and eventually launched her own label, INGA. Over the years, her designs have been featured in magazines like Vogue India and on prestigious fashion events such as Lakme Fashion Week.

Agnimitra reportedly designed outfits for several stars of the Bengali and Hindi film industry, most notably Sridevi, Mithun Chakraborty, Sushmita Sen, and Esha Deol. She even presented Kantha stoles and blankets to former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to Kolkata in 2012. Many Tollywood and Bollywood movies have used her designs, such as Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche (2002), Abhimanyu (2006), Via Darjeeling (2008), and Good Morning Sunshine (2023).

In 2019, Agnimitra Paul switched from fashion to politics and joined the BJP. Since then, her political rise within the party has been swift. From being a fresh political face to becoming vice-president of the BJP’s Bengal unit, she is now one of the party’s most prominent female leaders in Bengal.
Inside Agnimitra Paul’s family life

In her personal life, Agnimitra Paul is married to Partho Paul, an entrepreneur whom she met in 1992 during one of his visits to her father for some official work. At that time, Partho had recently joined his family business, Palson Drugs & Chemical Industries. She said in interviews how they connected instantly and began dating soon after. Recalling their first meeting in an earlier interview, she said:
“I first met Partho in 1992 when he’d visited my father on some official work. Our first impressions? My dad liked him instantly, my mother was a bit wary, and I thought he was an extremely genuine chap.”

At the time, Agnimitra had just completed Class 12 and reportedly dreamed of becoming a doctor after clearing the JEE. However, as she later reflected, when love comes calling, everything else becomes pale in comparison. In her own words:
“I had just completed Class 12 then, with dreams of clearing the JEE and becoming a doctor. But they say when love comes calling, all else pales in comparison.”

Agnimitra and Paul eventually married and now have two sons together. Despite her transition from fashion designing to active politics, Agnimitra has largely kept her family life away from the spotlight.
Agnimitra Paul’s massive 40,000+ vote victory and her run for the next CM of Bengal

In the 2026 Assembly elections, Paul retained her Asansol Dakshin seat by defeating TMC candidate Tapas Banerjee with a margin exceeding 40,000 votes. The scale of her recent victory has significantly boosted her profile within the BJP at a time when the party pulled off a landmark performance in Bengal. According to party insiders, her grassroots image and campaigning helped cement her position as a serious contender for the top post.

While Suvendu Adhikari largely remains the leading name for the chief minister’s post, reports say that BJP leaders are considering whether projecting a woman leader could strengthen the party’s position in Bengal politically. Party functionaries believe Agnimitra Paul could help the BJP directly challenge Mamata Banerjee’s long-held image as Bengal’s dominant woman leader. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya is also among the names being discussed.
A glimpse into Agnimitra Paul’s assets and liabilities

From what has been gathered from her election affidavit, Agnimitra Paul declared assets worth around Rs 3.85 crore along with liabilities exceeding Rs 1 crore. The affidavit also lists multiple pending criminal cases linked to political protests and allegations tied to public disorder. However, she has not been convicted in any case. Despite criticism from opposing parties, supporters have long viewed her as an energetic grassroots-level politician and an ideal candidate.
For now, Bengal waits for the BJP’s final decision, which is set to be announced on May 9, 2026, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
