A Texas teen, Karmelo Anthony, is in the news after he was sentenced to 35 years in prison for murdering a fellow athlete during a high school track meet. Anthony has been found guilty and was sentenced for his brutal act. The case has garnered huge attention with Anthony claiming the stabbing as an act of self-defence.
Who is Karmelo Anthony?
Karmelo Anthony was a student and athlete on the track and football teams at Centennial High School, which he also captained, in Frisco. Anthony was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was the oldest of four children. Anthony’s mother, Kayla Hayes, is a homemaker and likes keeping a low profile.

On the other hand, Anthony’s father, Drew Anthony, previously worked as a General Sales Manager at Pegasus Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Drew’s current employment is not listed anywhere. Anthony’s family appears to be decent, with a lavish home and expensive cars. The family had relocated to North Texas three years ago. Anthony has no prior criminal history, and his mother, Kayla, after his arrest, revealed how they have provided their kids with all the comforts and opportunities to succeed.

What happened at the high school track meet?
The case goes back to April 2025 at Kuykendall Stadium during a Frisco ISD event. The fiasco began near a team tent area during the meet. The trouble started when Anthony, who was 17 at that time, sat under the Memorial High School team tent and a fellow athlete, Austin Metcalf, also 17, repeatedly asked him to leave.

The argument escalated into a heated exchange and an altercation between the two teens. As things turned violent, Anthony reached into a bag and said, “Touch me and see what happens.” Metcalf then pushed Anthony, and as per the witnesses, Anthony pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest. Metcalf was rushed to a nearby hospital following the incident, but later succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

Karmelo Anthony claimed the murder as an act of self-defence
After the stabbing, when police took Anthony into custody, he justified his act by raising his hands up and stating, ‘I was protecting myself’. The case sparked debate over violence in schools. As per prosecutors, Metcalf and Anthony attended separate schools and had never met before the incident. Soon after the stabbing, Anthony was taken into custody by authorities, and he was charged with murder. However, in his defence, his lawyer maintained that Anthony acted in self-defence as, after the matter was heated up, Anthony believed that he was in danger.

Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison
During the trial, the prosecution expressed the act as ‘senseless’ and ‘plain and simple murder’, insisting there was no justification for the killing. After hearing testimony from students, investigators, medical experts, and character witnesses over several days, the Collin County jury found Anthony guilty of murder.

They rejected the claims of self-defence and imposed a 35-year prison term on Anthony. The jury demanded that Anthony serve at least half of the term before becoming eligible for parole. During the sentencing, Anthony, now 19, looked emotional, with his head down as the verdict was being read. His mother testified during the punishment phase. She appealed for leniency and expressed remorse on his behalf.

Austin Metcalf’s mother gave an emotional speech after Karmelo Anthony’s sentencing
After Karmelo Anthony’s sentence was read out, the victim’s mother got emotional and gave her heart-wrenching statement in court. Addressing Anthony, she said:
“You should feel lucky you got 35 because I’ve been given a life sentence without my son. We will never know what our future could have been. For journalists and activists, this is a story. For our family, this is our reality. My house is now quiet. He didn’t just die, He was taken from us.”
