Sonam Kapoor is a talented actress of Bollywood. Daughter of Anil Kapoor and Sunita Kapoor, Sonam had begun her career as an assistant director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s drama, Black. In 2007, she made her acting debut with Saawariya and then impressed the audience with her versatility in films like Delhi 6, Neerja, Aisha, Raanjhanaa and many more.
Sonam Kapoor once called 36-year-old Aishwarya Rai ‘aunty’
It was in 2009, when a cold war between Aishwarya Rai and Sonam Kapoor started after the latter was announced as the face of L’Oreal. At the time, it was widely speculated that Aishwarya had voluntarily stepped back from endorsing beauty products, creating space for the younger actress to step in.
But it was not just Sonam becoming the face of L’Oreal or Aishwarya Rai taking a step back made the headlines. It was Sonam’s unfiltered comment about the former Miss World that is still discussed in the media. After she bagged the international brand, L’Oreal, Sonam referred to Aishwarya as an “aunty from another generation”. Since at that time, Aishwarya Rai was just 36 and Sonam was 25, many felt the remark was dismissive, and blamed Sonam for age-shaming Aishwarya Rai.
Sonam Kapoor justified calling Aishwarya Rai ‘aunty’
Amid the controversy, Aishwarya chose to maintain a dignified silence on Sonam’s quote. Years later, Sonam sat for an interview with Hindustan Times and the actress tried to clarify her stance on the whole controversy. When asked why she called the former beauty queen an ‘aunty’, Sonam justified her stance and said, ‘Aish has worked with my dad, so I have to call her aunty, na!’
Sonam Kapoor commented on Aiswarya Rai’s purple lip look
In 2016 when Aishwarya’s purple lips at the CIFF became a hot topic of discussion and trolls, Sonam shared her views on Aishwarya’s looks and told PTI:
“The whole idea of fashion and makeup is for people to discuss it and I guess she (Aishwarya) wanted to be discussed. She achieved what she wanted to achieve with it, which I think is great. I think it (purple lip colour) looked great and she (Aishwarya) carried it off with aplomb. I think it was great to do it in the 15th year, it’s cool. She was trending everywhere.”
During Sonam Kapoor’s wedding with Anand Ahuja in 2018, her mother, Sunita personally invited Aishwarya Rai for the ceremony. As per reports, Sunita Kapoor bumped into Aishwarya at designer Sandeep Khosla’s niece’s wedding reception. Sunita made sure to greet her warmly and personally invited her for her daughter’s wedding. After a couple of days, Sonam also called Aishwarya and invited her. Aishwarya Rai graced Sonam’s wedding ceremony officially and cleared past rumours of a cold war between the actresses.
