The third and final ODI between West Indies and Sri Lanka was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Monday, handing the visitor a 1–0 series victory after persistent rain made play impossible.
Umpires called off the match shortly after 6 pm local time after concluding that the outfield could not be made fit for play, even if the weather improved.
Sri Lanka had taken control of the three-match series by winning the opener by 41 runs, securing its first ODI victory in the Caribbean in 13 years. The remaining two matches were both washed out, leaving the tourists with the series win.
“We’re very happy to win the series,” Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis said. “We did really well in that one game in all three departments.
“There’s not a lot of matches ahead of next year’s World Cup and I’m happy with my first series victory as captain.”
The triumph also marked the first series win for Sri Lanka under new head coach Gary Kirsten.
Credit where credit is due
West Indies captain Shai Hope acknowledged that the weather had played a decisive role but credited the visitor for making the most of its opportunity.
“You can’t control mother nature,” Hope said. “Credit must be given to the Sri Lankan team for the way they played in the first game.”
The teams will now shift focus to the T20I series, with the opening match scheduled to be played in Kingston on Thursday.
