He shared about how their good family friend, Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, influenced their decision to expand their family. JD has opened up about this important chapter of their lives in their upcoming book. He also mentioned how the untimely demise of his friend, Charlie Kirk, was a significant life-changing moment for him and Usha.
JD Vance reveals Erika Kirk inspired Usha Vance to have a fourth kid
According to an excerpt from JD Vance’s upcoming book obtained by the Wall Street Journal, he reflected on the emotional aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s sudden assassination in September 2025. He also recalled an important conversation between Usha and Erika that eventually left a lasting impact on their family. Recalling the moment when he and Usha flew down with Erika after Charlie’s demise, JD said:
“As my wife held Charlie Kirk’s widow on the first day of her terrible sorrow, Erika told Usha between sobs that she regretted having only two kids with Charlie.”
The Vice President explained that he had wanted another child for several years and asked his wife, Usha, about it. But she felt their family was complete with their three kids. At the same time, the second lady was hesitant about it, especially after their family entered the national spotlight due to his political career. However, the heartbreaking conversation with Erika, just after Charlie’s sudden death, somewhat changed her perspective about it. Especially since Charlie and Erika planned to have four kids, but after they welcomed two. Recalling the moment, he wrote:
“For years, I had asked Usha to have another baby, and for years she had told me she was done—especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight. But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy.”
JD Vance also reflected on the significant emotional impact of Charlie Kirk’s death on him. He mentioned that the Turning Point USA founder was his “best friend” in politics. In turn, the loss was devastating for him, especially given how he was assassinated at a young age. However, JD believes that if one life was stolen from them, the Almighty has blessed them with another. Although he may never fully understand why such tragedies happen, he is grateful to have an opportunity to grow his family.
Erika Kirk regretted not being pregnant with her third baby amid Charlie Kirk’s death
JD Vance’s comments come months after Erika Kirk opened up about her own thoughts on family after her husband’s death. She shared her views on SiriusXM’ The Megyn Kelly Show in November 2025. Erika revealed that she was hoping to have a third child with Charlie before his tragic assassination. According to the new chairperson of TUPSA, she and Charlie had already envisioned having a larger family. In turn, they had planned for four children. In fact, at the time of his death, they were already parents to a young daughter and a son.
Erika confessed that she had prayed for another pregnancy during that difficult period, which could have been a blessing amid her overwhelming grief. However, later she clarified that despite the online buzz, she was not pregnant during or after Charlie’s passing. Still, she encouraged other young couples not to delay starting families, and explained that Charlie’s sudden death completely shifted her outlook on life.
