Apple to Submit Data of Indian Business to CCI, Tim Cook, iPhone

Apple, the worldwide popular iPhone maker, has agreed to provide information about its business data in India to the Competition Commission of India (CCI). This American company is accused of misusing its dominant position in the market. This allegation is being investigated by CCI.

One of Reuters Report Quoting the CCI order, it has been told that last month Apple Has agreed to provide information about its business data in India. This data can be used by CCI to calculate penalty. In the hearing held on May 21, the company had sought permission to submit this data by June 25. CCI has approved this request of the company. CCI had found in its investigation that Apple had misused its dominant position in the market of iPhone-related apps. However, the company had denied this allegation. Apple had said it would challenge the findings of the investigation. Along with this, the company had refused to provide information related to its business.

Apple argued that the case should be put on hold because it is making a separate request to have the country’s new antitrust penalty law struck down. Under this law, CCI has got the power to impose penalties on companies based on the turnover of their international business. Apple had said that CCI has asked for data of its international business, which could lead to a penalty of up to $38 billion. However, CCI had declared this to be wrong. This regulator, which monitors competition in the country, had said that it only needs the data of the company’s business in the country.

Apple and CCI have not responded to Reuters’ requests for comment. The importance of India for Apple is continuously increasing. The company has achieved double-digit growth in the country in the March quarter. In the last few years, sales of iPhones have increased rapidly in the country. iPhones are also being manufactured on a large scale in the country. Recently, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook had said that India is a great market for the company. He said, “Despite performing well in India for the last few years, we have very low market share. There is a lot of opportunity for us in this market.” India is the second largest market for smartphones and the third largest for personal computers (PC) in the world.
