Netflix has done it again by engaging its audience in another true-crime documentary, The Crash. It focuses on the story of a now 21-year-old, Mackenzie Shirilla’s, alleged double murder case in the spotlight. Although the documentary presents her as a quiet prisoner, her former inmates have a different opinion. They revealed that, unlike public opinion, she was not focused on remorse or rebuilding her life. Instead, she has been planning her life outside the prison, and The Crash might just be the first in that direction.
Mackenzie Shirilla’s inmates share her surprising plan
The Crash follows the case of Mackenzie Shirilla, who was found guilty of murdering her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and his friend, Dayton Flanagan. It happened after she crashed her Toyota Camry into a brick building at a high speed of nearly 100 mph in July 2022. Although Mackenzie has maintained it was an accident, the debate over the incident’s nature continues. Meanwhile, her prison inmates, particularly her alleged girlfriend, Shyann Topping, have painted her contrasting image.
Shyann Topping recently claimed online that she had a brief romantic relationship with Mackenzie Shirilla at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. She sat down for a conversation with The US Sun and alleged that Mackenzie often made plans and spoke about her life outside prison. Shyann alleged that Mackenzie wants to use the public attention around the case to build her public image. In her words:
“She said she was just gonna live it if she gets out. She’s gonna be an influencer and write a book when she gets out about everything that happened.”
At the same time, Shyann highlighted what Mackenzie showed no remorse while behind bars. Instead, she was more focused on fame than on the victims’ families. According to her, Mackenzie initially convinced her that the deadly crash was an accident. However, after leaving the prison and learning more details about it, Shyann thinks otherwise. Shyann also claimed that if Mackenzie ever got released from prison, she would make fun of the victims’ loved ones. She also mentioned that when they were dating, Mackenzie used to become possessive and emotionally intense.

On the other hand, another former inmate of Mackenzie, Mary Katherine Crowder, has gone viral on TikTok. She shared that Mackenzie is someone who carries herself like an “It girl” in prison. Mary also spoke to The New York Post, claiming that Mackenzie acted more like a popular high school girl than a grieving inmate.
In fact, Mary went on to claim that Mackenzie was highly focused on her appearance. In turn, she would allegedly change the prison uniform. At the same time, she used to spend a lot of time on makeup and hair while worrying over tan during heat waves. She also called out Mackenzie’s claims about suffering from POTS, as Mary allegedly never saw her visit medical staff or take any medication in prison.

Mackenzie Shirilla’s life inside the prison is once again in the spotlight due to the release of Netflix’s The Crash. The documentary revisits the 2022 Ohio crash that killed Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan. In turn, Mackenzie was convicted of intentionally causing the accident. Later, she got a life sentence with the possibility of parole in 2037.
Overall, the documentary features courtroom footage, interviews, and text messages in which Mackenzie claims she is not a monster. Yet, prosecutors argued that she intentionally killed Dominic and Dayton. In fact, Judge Nancy Russo called Mackenzie’s actions “controlled, methodical, deliberate, intentional, and purposeful.”
